POWER OF GYPSY FAITH
Gypsies put faith in themselves, in their music, incantations and practices.
The magic of gypsies is not all deceit, though they can and know how to deceive with it. There is among the Hungarian
Gypsies a class of female magicians who stand far above their sisters of the hidden spell in power. These gypsies
are known as the lace romni, (Good Women) who draw their power directly from the spirits of water and earth. They
are trained from infancy by the elders in getting to the heart of incantations and formulas in common with their folklores
and fairy tales.
There are gypsy clans who believe that there are women and men who possess
supernatural power, partly inherited and partly acquired. The folklore beliefs reveal
that the last of seven daughters born in succession without a boy coming into the series, is wonderfully gifted, for she can
see hidden treasure or spirits, or enjoy second sight of many things invisible to others.
The same holds good for the ninth in a series of boys, who may become a seer of the same sort. These special gypsy children are trained from infancy by their mothers in medicine and magic. A great part of this education consists in the learning of incantations or formulas as written in their
legends and fairy tales.
The gypsies have a beautiful mythology that seemingly has similarities to
the composition of the Rosicrucian with exquisite Indo-Teutonic fairy tales of the Middle Ages. Gypsies have always
been noted for their psychic ability and their uncanny knowledge of things as they traveled the countryside in colorful horse-drawn
caravans. Acclaimed prac- titioners of the arcane arts, the gypsies have had a profound influence on folk music and
folk magic throughout the world. Every phase of their lives is steeped in ritual
and magic. Each of the gypsy clans/groups
had its own cultural, linguistic and historical tradition before migration to the new lands.
While gypsy life has a romantic appeal, life on the road was hard. The gypsies are admired for the legacy of
their folklores, their survival skills in a hostile world and for the longevity and persistence of their culture.
