REWRITES are an important part of most successful songs.  Most songwriting employs one-forth of the time in writing the main song format construction and then about three-fourths of the time in rewriting various section parts.  Re-writing is an art of finalizing the marriage of lyric and melody into the finished song.  Rewrites include the polishing, the sizzle and the finalizing of the signature song using the following elements:

Lyrical Storyline: rewriting ensure music compatibility works with lyric and music prosody

Accents:  place accents on the right syllables where words and musical spaces work in the artistic phrasing

Musical Spaces:  shorten or expand music spaces for best lyrical and melodic synchronicity

Wordy Lyrics:  reduce wordy lyrics; allow vocalist freedom to phrase within artist style

Impact:  substitute or heighten images, actions or dialogue lines that heighten songs impact

Omit Words: delete words or lines that are not essential that do not affect the meaning and flow of lyrics

Word Replacement:  add new words that have strong imagery or work with stronger lines that contribute to overall meaning

Song Dynamic:  create new dynamics that increase listeners’ attention

Melody Alternate:  create new and/or embellish verse and chorus melodies to differentiate sections

Rhyme Patterns:  re-arrange rhyming schemes and/or meter patterns to enhance the difference of song sections

Reduction:  shortening sentences or lines using fewer syllables, fewer metric feet

Inversion:  reversing parts of a line so that new rhyme words emerge from interior to the end position

Insertion:   fill in blanks when meter, number of syllables and lyrical concept are known

Rhyme Relocation:   flip-flop rhymes where the strongest word comes at the end rhyme
