MEDIA MARKET:  Business Managers

The music industry is a very complex and finding your niche and then working your way into it can be a tricky task, but extremely rewarding. If you have talent as an artist and songwriter (singer songwriter), a business manager can function to initiate publishing, record company deals and production deals. 

 

Managers get paid between 15 percent and 20 perent of your gross income, sometimes of your net and sometimes a combination.  That includes songwriting, publishing, record royalties and touring.  Management deals can be complex and often difficult to get a good, experienced manager unless you already have a record deal.  An experienced manager with a reputation in the music industry has a better ability to ger an artist signesd with a record label as opposed to an inexperienced manager.

 

A good manager with a stellar reputation can get an artist signed with a record company.   He also knows what Clubs, Concerts, Radio, TV Shows that should be involved in your career and promotions.   Managers oversee see and coordinate the activities of booking agents, road manager, publicist, accountant, attorney, business manager, publisher and producer.

 

A manager should be able to initiate publishing, record company and production deals.  He is typically the official contact with the record company and is the buffer and advisor between you and the business.   The manager’s role is to assist you in your career expansion as a successful artist and understands all the components of the talent machine and the need for coordination and teamwork.

 

A business manager serves to protect you and maximize your success; master the big picture and guide you in the finer points of record deals, including demos, compact discs, music videos; songwriting & publishing royalties, advances, copyrights; maximize concerts & touring,  music merchandising and internet music sales.

 

Some artists need a manager they can relate to on a personal basis; others just need a manager to take care of business and stay out of their personal life.  Some managers have “power of attorney” so they can make deals, sign contracts, cash checks, hire and fire crew on your behalf.
